San Diego County maintains one of the largest military populations in the nation. The County of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) celebrates their service year-round with a Distinguished Veteran Pass that qualifies war veterans, former Prisoners of War and recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor for up to seven nights of free camping at any DPR campground.

With Veterans Day right around the corner, they’ve decided to up the ante with a special athletic event designed to wow and challenge local heroes. The first annual County Parks WarriorHike will take place Saturday, Nov. 14, beginning at 8 a.m.

San Diegans are invited to meet at the El Capitan Preserve parking lot, located at 13775 Blue Sky Ranch Road in Lakeside, to participate in one of three sight-seeing hikes:

BOOT CAMP LEVEL: Families and beginner hikers will enjoy a quick, 1-mile jaunt to the ridge for a beautiful view of eastern San Diego. This trail is 2 miles round-trip, and is open to all ages.

RECON LEVEL: Moderately skilled hikers can continue on to the next peak located roughly 3 miles in, for a total of 6 miles, round-trip. This hike is best suited for teens and adults in good, athletic shape.

WARRIOR LEVEL: This trek is not for the faint of heart or ability; Warriors will hike 10 to 12 miles – heading to and from the top of El Cajon Mountain. The trail traverses over multiple inclines and declines with several hundred feet of elevation gain and loss – making it one of the toughest, most rugged trails in all of San Diego County. This hike can take up to 7 hours to complete. Warriors will need a strong sense of adventure and at least a gallon of water.

All hikers – boot-campers, recon experts and warriors, alike – should bring ample water, and dress appropriately with comfortable clothing and sturdy hiking shoes. Sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and a walking stick or poles are also recommended.

A welcome station will be stacked with park guides, brochures and healthy refreshments. Park personnel and volunteers will also be on site and stationed throughout the trail to answer questions and to help guide tours. This event will begin promptly at 8 a.m. and is scheduled to end at 3 p.m.

There is no cost to participate, and registration is not required, but recommended. To sign up in advance, click here. Parking details and weather updates will be posted to the Facebook site.
